Peyton (voiceover): At this moment there are 6,470,818,671 people in the world. Some are running scared. Some are coming home. Some tell lies to make it through the day. Others are just now facing the truth. Some are evil men, at war with good. And some are good, struggling with evil. Six billion people in the world. Six billion souls. And sometimes...all you need is one.

Episode 03: First Day on a Brand New Planet
Brooke: Sometimes people play hard to get because they need to know the other person's feelings are real.
Lucas: (voice over) Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote: ‘All are architects of fate so look not mournfully into the past. It comes not back again.’

Episode 04: An Attempt to Tip the Scales
Lucas: Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote: There is no privacy that cannot be penetrated. No secret can be kept in the civilized world. Society is a masked ball where everyone hides his real character, then reveals it by hiding.
Ellie: (to Peyton, in her costume) Angel of Death. You're a little early. Pause. How was the show? Do you wanna come inside.
Peyton: I'm, I'm not staying.
Ellie: I'm still glad you came. You, not the Death part.
Peyton: Look, I don't wanna be curious about you, but I can't help it, I am.
Ellie: Well, selfishly that's one battle I'm glad you're losing.
Peyton: I'm just scared.
Ellie: Of what?
Peyton: Forgetting my mom, okay, Anna. I used to have one of her t-shirts, that smelled like her, and I slept with it every night, until one day it started to smell more like me than it did her. And so I took it out and I tried every detergent I could find, just trying to find that smell, and I couldn't, it was gone, and... and so now sometimes I test myself, you know, just to see if I can find that smell, and once in a while I can, but it's getting harder and harder.

Episode 05: A Mulititude of Casualties
Ellie: (voiceover) It’s tough to get to know Peyton. Like me, she tends to keep the world at arms length. But in those fleeting moments she has let me in. I’ve seen in her, such indomitable courage and heart – a young woman anyone would be proud to call her daughter.
Peyton: (On her podcast) Hi guys. As you know, I recently met my birth mother, and I really didn't like her. As a matter of fact I drove her away, and now she's gone. But, the part that really sucks. You know that thing about judging a book by its cover? It's true. Sometimes you gotta read the whole thing and even then you still might not know the whole story.

Episode 06: Locked Hearts and Hand Grenades
Lucas: Can't we just pull the blinds or something?
Karen: Nope. Keeps me focused on how badly I need to beat him.
Lucas: Yeah, I saw him today. He's not going to make it easy on you, you know.
Karen: Is that what he told you?
Lucas: More or less.
Karen: You know Lucas I... I may not have the money or the connections that Dan has but what I do have is my reputation as a good upstanding person who raised a decent enough son on her own. And uh, apparently skipped the part of table manners and that's what the voters will see.
Lucas: Yeah, but is it worth it?
Karen: You know if you want to change something, you have to be willing to work hard at it.
Lucas: But you do work hard, Mom. I mean come on you run two businesses.
Karen: Well, sometimes when you're done working hard, you have to work a little harder.
Karen: Where you off too?
Lucas: To work a little harder.
Lucas: Look, you don't get it. If you tell Whitey I have a heart condition I'm off the team.
Haley: Yeah, and if I don' tell Whitey about your heart condition you're off the planet!
Lucas: Haley, for the longest time I have been an outsider. When I joined this team and the guys accepted me I became part of something and it's something I care about.
Haley: I know Luke.
Lucas: I'm not gonna die if I take the pills. I just have to work hard to compensate for the medication.
Haley: Luke, will you listen to yourself? The medication that you're taking is supposed to inhibit your performance, that is how it saves your life.
Lucas: I'm the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.
Haley: What?
Lucas: William Henley, Invictus. It's Latin -
Haley: Invincible. Yeah, I know the poem. I also know that William Henley didn't have a heart condition. Luke, you're not invincible! I just hope you live long enough to realize it.
Brooke: Well what am I supposed to?
Peyton: There's this new thing out, it's called an apology, all the cool kids are doing it, why don't you give it a try!
Lucas: (voiceover) Out of the night that covers me, black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul. In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance my head is bloody, but unbowed. Beyond this place of wrath and tears looms but the Horror of the shade, and yet the menace of the years finds, and shall find, me unafraid. It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul. ~ William Ernest Henley - Invictus

Episode 07: Champagne for My Real Friends, Real Pain for My Sham Friends
Lucas: Pascal says, The heart has reasons that reason cannot know.
Mouth: Give me regret as long as I can keep the good memories too. We all have regrets, but some of us still have time to erase them.
------------08.06.21
Episode 08: The Worst Day Since Yesterday
Lucas: (voiceover) Robert Lewis Stevenson wrote: You cannot run away from a weakness; you must sometimes fight it out or perish. And if that be so, why not now, and where you stand?
Karen: (to Lucas) You know, a customer once told me that the best way to get over someone was to get under someone else. Oh my God. I just realized what that meant. (gasps) Oh, my God. I thought it was more philosophical...

Episode 09: How a Resurrection Really Feels
Brooke: There are 82 letters in here, and they're all addressed to you. I wrote them all this summer. One a day, but I never sent them 'cause I was afraid.
Lucas: Brooke...
Brooke: I was afraid of getting my heart broken again, like before. 'Cause you hurt me so bad, and I was afraid to be vulnerable. And I was afraid of you and the way that you make me feel. And I know that doesn't matter now after what I did, but I just thought that you should know. This was how I spent my summer, Luke, wanting you... I'm just too scared to admit it.
(walks away Lucas followes her)
Lucas: Brooke! I'm sorry! What you did with Chris... it's okay.
Brooke: It's not. It can't be. It's too much to forgive!
Lucas: Well, that's too bad because I forgive you.
Brooke: You can't!
Lucas: I just did. So you're gonna just have to deal with it. I'm the guy for you Brooke Davis, and I know I hurt you last time we're together, but...
Brooke: I love you.
Lucas: I love you, too... pretty girl.
(they kiss)
Peyton: What do you wanna do?
Haley: Well, we should call somebody, like our parents.
Brooke: Mine are in California.
Haley: Mine are in an RV somewhere.
Peyton: Mine's out to sea. Or dead, or banished

Episode 10: Brave New World
Lucas (voiceover): Ida Scott Taylor once wrote, "Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone and do not be troubled for the future for it is yet to come. Live in the present and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering."
------------08.06.25
Episode 11: Return of the Future
Brooke: I don't know why it's so easy for me to get naked one way, but not the other.
Karen:You are almost 18 years old and I'm almost 36 years old and if you do the maths it's pretty obvious what my concerns are...
Lucas:Mom, we didn't do that, we're being careful, more careful than you know!
Karen:It's more than being careful with the chemistry, Lucas, it's about being careful with your heart.
Lucas:Like you are with Keith!? ... I know, you're right mom and I get it, but maybe if you're always looking for reasons not to be with somebody, you'll always find 'em and I guess in some point, maybe you should let go and give your heart what it deserves ...
Lucas: (voice over) H.L. Mencken wrote "Every normal man must be tempted at times to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats."

Episode 12: I've Got Dreams to Remember
Ellie: You don't wanna go to college?
Peyton: Does that surprise you?
Ellie: Actually, it does. I just assumed you'd go.
Peyton: Why?
Ellie: Because you can. I never understood people who had the chance to go and chose not to.
Peyton: Well, I don't understand people that waste four years in school when they could be out living life.
Ellie: What's the hurry? From what I hear, college is fun. I can see you majoring in art, or music, or business.
Ellie: What about you? Do you have any beneficial friends?
Peyton: No! I dated this guy Nathan for a while but we were more benefits than we were friends. We're just friends, no benefits now. And then there is this other guy but he was more than that.
Ellie: Were you in love with him? (Peyton nods) It's the hard part, sex is easy. But if you find someone you're in love with who's also your friend, wouldn't that be the greatest benefit?
Peyton: That's a fairytale I guess.
Ellie: There's nothing wrong with fairytales. Everyone ends up happily ever after.
Haley: I don't think you'll ever realize how much you love something until you have to give it up.
------------08.06.27
Ellie: Don't be afraid Peyton. Every song has a coda, a final movement, whether it fades out or crashes away. Every song ends, is that any reason not to enjoy the music?
Peyton: It doesn't mean I can't want it to not end.
Ellie: Look at you. You've had more life changing events in the first 17 years of your life than I'd wish on anyone. You got the surviving part down. I want you to focus more on the living.
Peyton: Sometimes surviving is about all the living I can handle.
Ellie: I don't buy that for one second. And if you keep this up hiding in your art and your sadness, you're really gonna miss out. Because the truth is, there is nothing to be afraid of. It's just life.
Lucas: Brooke, I’m sorry I said that. You’re not psychotic. I mean, a little disturbed, maybe.
Brooke: You think this is funny?!
Lucas: Know what I think? I think you’re trying to sabotage us. Find any reason you can end it. So that you don’t have to worry about getting hurt again.
Brooke: But the same words, Lucas? The exact same words?!
Lucas: (shaking his head) I never sent that letter to Peyton.
Brooke: And I never sent my letters to you either but they still meant something! (pause) Just tell me, why me this time. Why not Peyton?
Lucas: I can’t say anything bad about Peyton. She’s my friend, and she’s your best friend!
Brooke: That’s OK, you can say bad things about her.
Lucas: Oh, Brooke. The truth is, I care about Peyton.
Brooke: Then what is the difference?
Lucas: The difference... The difference is I love you, Brooke. I wanna be with you, not Peyton.
Brooke: But why? I need to know why.
Lucas: Because you kink your eyebrow when your trying to be cute. And you quote Camoo, even though I've never actually seen you read. And because, you miss your parents, but you'll never ever admit that. And because I've given exactly two of these embarrassing speeches in my entire life, and they've both been with you. I mean, that's gotta mean something right? And because we're both gonna get pneumonia, but if you need to hear why I love you, I can go on all night.
Brooke: (whispering) You did it pretty good.
(Brooke steps up to him and kisses him)
Peyton: Say hi to my mom, mom.
------------08.06.28
Episode 14: All Tomorrow's Parties
Tony Battle: (About his father). He says regret makes you old and bitterness poisons the people around you.
Peyton: (Voiceover) I read a poem once, about a girl who had a crush on a guy that died. She imagined him up in Heaven with all the beautiful angels. And she was jealous. Ellie is gone. I imagine her with the bada** angels now, hanging out with them in their black leather jackets, causing trouble. But I'm not jealous. I just miss her.
Lucas: (voice-over) Most of our life is a series of images. They pass us by like towns on the highway. But sometimes a moment stuns us as it happens. And we know that this instant is more than a fleeting image. We know that this moment, every part of it, will live on forever.
Haley: Brooke, what the heck? What about the fashion show?
Brooke: I have the rest of my life for that stuff. Not so much to be seventeen with my friends.
------------08.06.29
Episode 15: Just Watch The Fireworks
Lucas: Great, it's gone global.
Haley: Yeah, well at least now the whole world knows all the nice things you said about me, to go along with all the crappy things that Nathan said about me.
Lucas: Well, what'd he say when you talked to him?
Haley: I haven't talked to him yet, I know, I just don't wanna pry open old wounds.
Lucas: Yeah, well I think the time capsule did that for you.
Haley: It just really sucks coz now I have to get back up on stage and sing for this benefit. It's like the worst possible time for all this stuff to blow up again. What'd you say to, uh, hooter girl when she made her topless debut?
Lucas: Ahhhhh, I told her she looked beautiful.
Haley: Oh, god!
Lucas: Hey, you know what?If you get into trouble, just roll that one out.
Haley: Yeah, I'll remember that, thanks.
Rachel: That's the scary truth. We're all alone.
Mouth: Not if we have friends.
Whitey: It's been fifty years, fifty long years since I've done this. Looking back on what I said all those years ago, all the hopes and dreams I had, I've come to the conclusion that if having things turn out the way you wanted them to is the measure of a successful life, then some would say that I'm a failure. The important thing is not to be bitter over life's disappointments. Learn to let go of the past. And recognize that every day won't be sunny, and when you find yourself lost in the darkness and despair remember it's only in the black of night you see the stars. And those stars will lead you back home. So don't be afraid to make mistakes, or stumble and fall, cause most of the time the greatest rewards come from doing the things that scare you the most. Maybe you'll get everything you wish for. Maybe you'll get more than you ever could have imagined. Who knows where life will take you. The road is long and in the end, the journey is the destination.

Episode 16: With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept
Brooke: There are kids inside our school fearing for their lives right now. Terrified that someone is going to put a gun in their face and pull the trigger, and you wanna know how I'm feeling? Our pain is not a commodity for you. It's not a newsbyte to boost your ratings. Because tomorrow, or the next day, or the next week when WE go back to school, changed forever by a day that'll never leave us, where are you gonna be? At the next TRAGEDY? Thrusting your microphone at the next fractured person asking them how they feel? Lady, that is not journalism, YOU are not contributing anything to society. You are buzzards, circling the carnage, but you prey on the living. THAT is how I'm feeling. But something tells me you're not gonna air that.
(Brooke walks away leaving the reporter humiliated.)
Actually those words weren't aired, but they remind me of the earthquake, of how journalists rushed into SICHUAN...
Abby Brown: What's wrong with you? He's just a kid. We're all just kids and we just have this life and the things you say and do, we feel that. How can you have so much hate in your heart? How can you act like it doesn't matter? It does matter. What happened to us? We're just kids. We can't be like this. It's not possible.
Peyton: We had a snow day. Sixth grade, do you remember? It was like this whole other world just came in overnight and took ours away. Brooke, she came over and we made a snowfort... with a tunnel. And we stayed in there all day. It seemed so safe, like everything was okay. Like everything our world was about to become, maybe we could just stop it and stay little kids for one more day. But then it got cold, kinda like now. They're gonna come now. All of them. The reporters and the psychologists and the analysts. And the so-called experts. And they're gonna try and make sense of this. But they're not gonna be able to. And even if we do make it out of here, we're always gonna carry it with us. Its never gonna be the same.
Lucas: Does this darkness have a name? This cruelty, this hatred, how did it find us? Did it steal into our lives, or did we seek it out and embrace it? What happened to us? That we now send our children into the world like we send young men to war... Hoping for their safe return... But knowing that some will be lost along the way. When did we lose our way? Consumed by the shadows, swallowed whole by the darkness. Does this darkness have a name? Is it your name?
Episode 17: Who Will Survive, and What Will Be Left of Them
Lucas: Coach...
Whitey: I know you want some answers, but what is the right answer? Because there is no answer, it's just life.
Episode 18: When It Isn't Like It Should Be
Lucas: John Steinbeck once wrote change comes like a little wind that ruffles the curtains of dawn and it comes like the stealthy perfume of wild flowers hidden in the grass.
Nathan: I never spent enough time with him, you know. Keith. But, it's weird, even though he's gone, a part of me still feels very happy for the time I did have.
Lucas: I think that's what this weekend is about. Not regretting our pasts but appreciating everything that we've got now. Great friends, great memories. And you know what? I think that's exactly how he would want it.
Episode 19: I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me
Nathan: Father, can I ask you a question? When you decided you wanted to be a priest how did you know it was the right thing to do?
Priest: I had a devout belief in God.
Nathan: Can you prove that to us, with some sort of a test I mean?
Priest: Of course not.
Nathan: Just like you can't prove love with a test. I mean, this is just a score on a sheet of paper. Sure, Haley and I have our differences, but this test doesn't show how hard we've worked to keep this relationship together, or that I can't stand it when we're apart, or that every time I look at her I know that I'm gonna be with her for the rest of my life. We love each other father, no test is going to show that.
(Peyton's father, Larry, talking to Peyton)
Larry: Promise me that when you pick the boy you're really gonna be with, that he'll be someone who respects you and treats you well. That it's, it's someone who makes your heart race and that he's someone who you love because of what he is, not what he does....that's how I want you to feel one day...use your head and follow you heart.
Episode 20: Everyday Is a Sunday Evening
Nathan: (voiceover) Every once in a while people step up, they rise above themselves. Sometimes they surprise you, and sometimes they fall short. Life is funny sometimes, it can push pretty hard, but if you look close enough you find hope in the words of children, in the bars of a song and in the eyes of someone you love. And if you're lucky, and if you're the luckiest person on this entire planet, the person you love decides to love you back.
Nathan: Stepping up. It's a simple concept. It basically means to rise above yourself; to do a little more, to show you something special. Something like this....Lucas is gone but that doesn't mean the season is over. As a matter of fact, I say it's just beginning. You might want to stay out of my way for a while....Life's funny sometimes; can push pretty hard like when you fall in love with someone but they forget to love you back like when your best friend and your boyfriend leave you alone like when you pull the trigger or light the flame and you can't take it back. Like I said, in sports they call this 'stepping up'. In life, I call it pushing back.
Episode 21: Over the Hills and Far Away
...
------------08.07.05
Episode 22: The Show Must Go On
Brooke: (quoting Shakespeare)Love is not love which alters, when an alteration finds. When life gets hard, when things change..true love remains the same.
Lucas: The last time I gave a speech about Nathan and Haley was, well, at their first reception. And I remember saying, "prepare to be surprised." Well I have to say, even I was surprised. Because, you see, they do something that's very rare to see in someone our age. Actually, it's very rare to see in anybody. They give their heart's to each other, unconditionally. And that's what true love really is. It's not this fairy-tale life that never knows pain. But it's two souls facing it together, and diminishing it, with unconditional love. (raises his glass) To Nathan and Haley...Scott.
